In the School of Theater at FSU, I was originally on a Stage Management track. This meant I was in charge of the organization of paperwork, rehearsals, and the show. I have been using Microsoft Word, Google Doc, and Pages for many years because of this. I would have to send daily schedules, calendars, and reports. All of the SM students had relatively the same paperwork, however, we would change the design layout to make it our own. MS Word is actually my least favorite program because I tend to ask it to do things that it does not like and I end up having to re-do the entire paper. Pages is a lot easier for me to navigate and google docs is easier for group editing.
A huge part of working in theater is getting the rights to plays or musicals. There are a few companies that handle the rights to all of the shows, and we have to pay them to access certain things for the show. There are scripts, music scores, logos. Some go even farther and make you pay for specific dance moves or costume pieces. Some shows like Shakespeare are public domain, so anyone can do it at any time without having to pay. This is very important to note because depending on the show, the cost can be very high. Another aspect of theatre is called devising which is a type of theater where we create our own script or story based off of an idea. This also bleeds into Documentary Theater which uses real live events, people, or verbatim words. There are so many legal things that go into creating these types of theaters. Normally, a documentary theater piece will have a huge section at the end of the script that includes all of the sources and writers.
For decreased productivity, having hidden incentives (like our tokens) will boost productivity as well as make learning fun. For dishonesty, bullying, or privacy, I think the best option is to set an extremely high student expectation for how tech should be treated, and take away priveledges immediately. For my classroom, I will not be using technology in the traditional sense. My technology will be lights and sound boards and tools, sewing machines, or software for tech students. Theater technology is very important to understand because someone could get hurt. The first day of class will be a walk through of the space as well as constant reminder of how to operate. Students will also have the opportunity to volunteer to work rentals so they get more practice in time with the machines.
